Terming his visit as very successful and productive, President Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday that his discussions with the Asian-African leaders focussed on finding ways and means to enhance economic relations. In his departure statement, he said that Pakistan desires to increase co-operative and institutional linkages with East and south-east Asia. The President also discussed bilateral relations, regional and international security issues, reform of UN Security Council at the Asian-African Summit.
He said that the visit was very successful and productive.
The Summit was convened to mark the Golden Jubilee of Asian-African Bandung Conference of 1955.
A large number of Heads of State/Governments attended the Conference held in Jakarta and Bandung.
Musharraf said that the important outcome of the Conference was adoption of Declaration on the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership and Joint Ministerial Statement on the Plan of Action for the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership.
Another document relating to preparedness to cope with natural disasters was also adopted, he added.
During his stay in Jakarta, the President had bilateral meetings with a number of leaders from Asia and Africa and the Secretary General of the United Nations.
The leaders included the President of China, Prime Minister of Singapore, First Vice President of Iran, President of Sudan, President of Afghanistan, King of Nepal, President of Tajikistan and Prime Minister of Vietnam.
The President interacted with many other leaders during the Summit in Jakarta and the ceremonies in Bandung.
In his bilateral interaction with the delegation of Timor-Leste, the two sides signed a Joint Communique establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.
He also had an extended meeting with the President of Indonesia, Susilo Sambang Yudhoyuno. "We reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to enhance bilateral economic co-operation particularly in the field of trade and commerce," he said.
Pakistan's increased interest in strengthening its relations with East and south-east Asia, including enhancing institutional linkages with Asean, was also discussed.
The President addressed the Asian-African Summit on April 22.
He also addressed, as the keynote speaker, the Asian-African Business Summit organised on the sidelines of the Summit. The address was followed by a lively interaction with the press.
On April 21, 2OO5, the President addressed a large gathering of Pakistani community at the foundation laying ceremony of the Embassy Complex in Jakarta.
On the same day, he also addressed a large number of leading Indonesian businessmen and potential investors at a dinner. The President explained the business and investment opportunities in Pakistan and the incentives introduced by the Government to facilitate joint ventures and foreign investment.
He was also interviewed by the print and electronic media during his stay.
The President thanked the Indonesian Government for the gracious hospitality and excellent arrangements made for the historic gathering of leaders from Asia and Africa.
