A four-day meeting of the corps commanders, formation commanders, and principal staff officers is beginning at GHQ Rawalpindi on April 25 (Monday) to review geo-political, strategic, internal and external security environment, and professional matters of the Pakistan Army, reliable sources told Business Recorder here on Sunday. Sources said that President General Pervez Musharraf, who is also the Chief of the Army Staff, will preside over the meeting, which is being held at a time when changes of far-reaching geo-political and strategic significance have taken place in the region.
They said that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will also participate in some of the sessions of the Commanders meeting wherein performance of various sectors of the economy, implementation of the development schemes, initiatives in the social, educational sectors, poverty alleviation, and empowerment of the poor, general law and order situation, and other internal matters will be reviewed.
Sources also said that President General Pervez Musharraf will brief the participants of the meeting about the historic dimension of relationship between Pakistan and China after signing of the Friendship Treaty during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's recent visit to Islamabad, outcome of parleys with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, and his just concluded visit to the Philippines and Indonesia.
They said there has been a qualitative and quantitative change in the South Asia and Regional security environment, economic co-operation, grouping, short and long-term strategic planning and goals of the regional players and new evolving challenges which would come up under detailed discussion at the commanders meeting.
