Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Tariq Hameed has said that more than Rs 60 billion to be spent on raising of Mangla Dam and this programme would be accomplished within three and half year. Talking to Business Recorder during his visit to Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) here on Thursday, he elaborated that Rs 30 billion would be spent on rising of Mangla dam, while Rs 30 billion would be spent on resettlement programme.
Tariq Hamid disclosed that four satellite stations were being established for accommodating the victims of Mangla Dam where all modern basic amenities would be ensured.
The Wapda Chairman said strenuous efforts were being made for providing the facility of electricity in villages adding that there are more than 34,000 villages are without the facility in the country. Out of this total 14000 villages are located in Balochistan while 20,000 were locate in other provinces he said.
Tariq Hameed said that strategy had been prepared under which all villages would be electrified in three years.
He revealed that 5.2 million consumers are consuming 300 units electricity monthly throughout the country and Wapda paying Rs 22 billion as subsidy as a result of which Wapda was facing huge financial burden.
The Chairman Wapda said that in order to coping with shortage of electricity the construction of big dams like Kalabagh Dam and Bhasha Dam were direly needed for generating maximum electricity for catering industrial and domestic need more easily. The government had set up parliamentary and technical committees for assessing the possibilities of Kalabagh and Bhasha dams and government would soon announce the construction of the dams in the light of assessment reports of committees he added.
