President General Pervez Musharraf chaired the formation commanders' conference that started here on Monday at the General Headquarters. The President dwelt at length on the prevailing environment encompassing international, regional and national issues with particular reference to their impact on Pakistan. In his opening remarks, the President appreciated the high state of operational preparedness and training efficiency and an all-time vigilance of the army. The President recounted key achievements of the armed forces in the past one year and lauded the hard work and efforts of all ranks.
General Musharraf mentioned the holding of Pakistan Day Parade, which was done after a gap of three years, IDEAS-2004, rescue works during the tsunami in Asian countries and floods and unprecedented snowfall in Balochistan, NWFP, Northern Areas and other parts of country.
The President commended the extensive work done by the army engineers for rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage and the LBOD.
Talking about the internal security, President Musharraf specially made a mention of the extraordinary work done by the army and intelligence agencies and other government departments in combating terrorism and success achieved in this regard in Fata and other parts of the country.
Appreciating efforts of security forces and political elements in bringing peace at Sui and Dera Bugti, the President hoped that development works in Balochistan will go on uninterrupted.
The President said no one would be allowed to cause damage to national assets.
Briefing participants about his recently concluded visit to India, Indonesia and Philippines in general and Pak-India peace process in particular, the President said key to Pak-India relations is the resolution of Kashmir dispute for which confidence-building measures and dispute resolution will have to move in tandem. Era of conflict management is over and conflict resolution has to be done with sincerity, the President emphasised.
In the second session, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz also joined the conference and State Bank of Pakistan Governor Dr Ishrat Husain briefed participants on the present state of economy and future prospects including poverty alleviation and job creation.
Other briefings to participants were by Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar on commerce and trade policy, and Minister for Industries, Production and Special Initiatives Jahangir Khan Tareen on the industrial and agricultural strategy.
Addressing participants, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz shared his views on stagecraft and governance. The Prime Minister spoke on the main pillars of stagecraft including economy, national security, political stability, good governance and diplomacy.
The Prime Minister as well as all speakers underscored the importance of continuation of reforms beyond 2007 for sustained growth of the country.
President General Pervez Musharraf also hosted a dinner in honour of the participants of Formation Commanders Conference.
Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro, Senior Defence Minster Rao Sikandar Iqbal, Chairman Joint Chiefs of the Staff Committee General Ehsan-ul-Haq, Services Chiefs and senior serving military officers attended the dinner.
