Saudi Arabia and Iran are in the run for the office of President of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) for the remaining one-year term. The office of head of the ICCI fell vacant after the demise of Ismail Abu Dawood. The election of ICCI President will be held in Jeddah on May 10, said Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) President, Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed while talking to newsmen after a meeting of the Managing Committee of FPCCI held at the LCCI on Saturday. Both the candidates Saleh Kamal of Saudi Arabia and Khamoushi of Iran were seasoned and sincere businessmen, he added.
Chaudhry Saeed said, "although FPCCI had some suitable candidates for this prestigious slot, but due to personal reasons no body has yet forwarded his name. The FPCCI would make efforts to bring consensus candidate, as both Saudi Arabia and Iran are respectable for Pakistan.
At present, Pakistan is member of the Managing Committee of the ICCI, which comprises over 17 members. There are total 57 members of the ICCI and Pakistan also holds the office of vice-president. Ten people from Pakistan will be participating in Jeddah meeting".
Giving details of today's Managing Committee meeting, Saeed said the committee discussed in detail short-term and long-term visions of the FPCCI. Short-term vision will be for the remaining tenure of sitting president of the federation, while long-term vision will be for next eight years.
Both the visions are aimed at enhancing economic activities in the country through attracting investment, taking advantage of strategic position of Pakistan and helping government in meeting the export and other targets, he added.
He further said that they also discussed the issues of World Trade Organisation (WTO) challenges, anti-dumping duties and non-tariff barriers. The meeting also discussed introduction of information technology, ISO-9000 certification of the Federation and bringing improvement in the working environment of the federation.
Replying to a question about proposed 'made in Pakistan' exhibition of the Federation, he said the committee proposed to hold it in some where in February or March next year. There was also another proposal to change its name and call it 'Brand Pakistan' and utilise it to promote soft image of Pakistan. He said that it would be held near Qaddafi stadium and dates would be fixed in a manner that it could be held soon after Jashn-e-Baharan in Lahore. He said the Federation was also working on introduction of Quality Awards.
