The National Highway Authority (NHA) has invited proposals from stakeholders for its Rs 536.28 million gigantic planned projects to be executed in the NWFP in 2005-06. "NHA will encourage proposals from different stakeholders for bringing the planned and ongoing projects durable, long-lasting and lifelong for road users in future," said General Manager NWFP Yousaf Ali while talking to APP. Realising the government's financial constraints and in furtherance of the policy announced by the government, he said, "The NHA is currently pursuing to materialise private sector participation to augment state resources to implement road projects though the mechanism of BOT concept."
GM NHA said: "Some projects currently in the pipeline for execution through this concept are NHA ongoing Motorway project of Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1), which is expected to be completed in January 2007." He said the Motorway (M-1) project has got an immense importance to cement trade ties with Central Asian States (CARs).
He said NHA (Frontier) has planned Routine Maintenance Works (RMW) on N-55 (D.I. Khan), which would be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 14.9 million, N-55 (Karak) Rs 15.60million, N-5 (Peshawar) Rs 17.26million and Rs 19 million is the estimated cost of N-45 in (Batkhela) route of Nowshera-Batkhela-Dir-Chitral in the year 2005-06.
Yousaf said the Authority has planned Periodic Maintenance Works (PMW) for N-55- D I Khan, Karak, Peshawar and N-45 Malakand (Batkhela), saying, as many as Rs 444.52 million are being allocated to rehabilitate these highways.
He said: "NHA is committed to road assets preservation through improved maintenance and upgradation with equal emphasis of its protection and rehabilitation for the entire national highway network." The NHA (F) has planed Highway Safety Works (HSW) in the year 2005-06.
Similarly, he said Rs 109.554 million is being spent on these national highways under the Periodic Maintenance Works in the year 2004-05.
He informed that the organisation has initiated several mega projects to accelerate the process of rapid development of the country and ease traffic flow.
He said: "National highways are an effective source of promoting social bonds and economic conditions. Availability of highway network, he said, "casts positive effects on environment, economy, life-style and agricultural & industrial development of the particular region."
He lauded Chairman NHA Major General Farrukh Javed's special interest for highway network projects in the province. He said: "NHA is providing assistance to the NWFP government to repair and rehabilitate roads there."
He urged the stakeholders and highways users to come forward and send their proposals so that effective channels of communication can be developed.
