Various leading companies have shown interest to participate in the bidding for appointment of external consultants of the Sui Southern Gas Company's (SSGC) integrated LNG terminal project. According to a company's release issued here on Tuesday, this was discussed in a "pre-proposal conference" hosted by the SSGC at its head office. Various companies had expressed their desire to participate in the bidding for appointment of external consultants for integrated LNG import project that was advertised recently.
The LPG project, once completed, is expected to deliver between 300 and 500mmcfd of natural gas to SSGC's network, which is currently transmitting 1,200mmcfd.
The objective of launching the LNG project in the country, as the management explained, was essentially to close the emerging gap between the supply and demand of gas, foreseen during the next three to five years.
The project, likely to be set up in the proximity of Port Qasim Authority or Karachi Port Trust (KPT), on the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) or Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis.
The project will cover a complete range of activities involving procurement, transportation, storage and re-gasification of LNG, for which expertise will be obtained from most competitive sources in the world.
Major shipping companies, LNG firms, specialists in terminal construction and consortia are expected to be involved in the commissioning of the project.
Eleven companies, representing international and local consultants, groups of consultants, banks and other institutions participated in the pre-proposal conference.
They were given a detail briefing by the company management on the long-term energy plan based on different scenario and the need to develop alternative sources in view of the country's depleting gas supplies.
The LNG is, therefore, expected to play a key role in the process along with transnational pipelines that are also being contemplated.
Participants asked questions seeking clarification on the application process and also provided expert advice on the terms of reference and conditions set by the company.
SSGC managing-director Munawar Baseer Ahmad said the company had, in its golden jubilee year, achieved the distinction of becoming a million-dollar company, based on expected current year revenue.
He appreciated the response to company's advertisement for appointment of consultants. He said 24 companies had so far expressed interest in participating in the process and nearly half of them had chosen to attend the pre-proposal conference.
He further said transcripts of proceedings of pre-proposal conference shall be made available to all participants within the next few days so that everyone derives equal benefit from it.-PR
