Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Tuesday arrested nine suspects for copyright violations and seized over 100,000 pirated CDs, video and audio cassettes, FIA Director Babar Khattak told journalists in Karachi. Khattak said six factories had been shut down and sealed after separate raids. The Pakistan government has launched a campaign to enforce copyright law and to catch those behind the manufacturing and selling of pirated DVDs, VCDs, and computer discs, he said. "There will be more and more raids," Khattak added.
United States last week blacklisted Pakistan, China, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines as Asian copyright violators and said it was seeking tougher action to combat the piracy and counterfeiting of US goods.
A total of 14 nations were placed on a "priority watch list," with China added to the list this year.
