City Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan has requested vice-chancellor, University of Karachi Dr Pirzada Qasim to take KU syndicate into the confidence on recruitment of fresh KU officials, declare the ongoing selection process null and void and hold it in accordance with already laid down criteria and practices carried out in the past, PPI learnt on Thursday. The Nazim made these requests following allegations from five assistant controllers of the varsity, hired three years back on ad hoc basis, that the university administration has debarred them from appearing in selection board for appointment of fresh employees in the officers' cadre, despite written assurances that they would be given chance to appear before the selection board.
Reliable sources at the KU told PPI that the university has invited some 25 candidates to appear before the selection board, to be held on May 7, 2005 for appointment of assistant controllers, who applied for the vacancies following an advertisement by the university administration. Ironically, five assistant controllers, hired during former vice-chancellor Dr Zafar Saeed Saify's tenure, including Burhanuddin Kazmi, Moiz Ahsan and two others, were not invited although all of them meet the criteria in addition to having three years experience, they added.
Interestingly, all these five assistant controllers were assured in black and white at the time of appointment that they would be given chance to appear before the selection board, whenever these posts are advertised, they further informed.
All these affected assistant controllers appealed to Sindh Governor and Chancellor of KU and President Pervez Musharraf to take stock of the situation as they were being punished by not inviting to appear before the selection board as they had unveiled several corruption cases. "We have detected financial and administrative irregularities of several KU officials, which enraged them and they hatched conspiracies against us by creating hurdles in our appearing before the selection board," they added.
An official of the university, when contacted said these assistant controllers were not meeting the qualifications required for the advertised posts, due to which they were not invited to appear before the selection board.
He, however, of the view that when these officials were assured by the previous administration that they would be invited to regularise their appointments, they should have been given the chance to appear in the selection board.
CITY DEVELOPMENT: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that each and every one should take part in the development of Karachi.
"People living here should think as to what this city gave them, and the well-to-do people, especially the industrialists, should serve the cause of Karachi." He was speaking as chief guest at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of a park and lease distribution at Akhtar Colony here on Wednesday night.
Naimatullah Khan said: "I am serving this city day and night because I had started my life from a hutment here and today I am City Nazim. The people owe to this city and they must payback the debt."
He described Katchi Abadis an 'ornament on the forehead of Karachi', saying the people living in these Abadis contributed exemplarity towards development of this city. The City Nazim said to speak lie is a big sin to him and as a City Nazim he never made a false promise. He referred to his promise to give lease to Katchi Abadis and today proprietary rights are being granted at the 1979 rate of Rs 25 to Rs 200 per sq. yard.
He said that lease camps have been established in Katchi Abadis so that maximum number of people could get the lease.
