A senior leader of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Syed Munawar Hassan had said the leadership of conglomerate was making efforts for a 'Grand Alliance' of opposition parties against President Musharraf and his government as it had become imperative for restoration of democracy and supremacy of law in the country. "We are in constant touch with opposition parties of the country and all reached on a consensus to form alliance for restoration of democracy and rule of law", he said while talking to reporters here on Friday. Syed Munawar Hassan, who is also Secretary General of Jamat-i-Islami Pakistan was in city for public contact move.
He said Pakistan Peoples Party has shown some reservations over alliance but it would be resolved. "The agenda of PPP being pro-American and secular political party is close to Musharraf, but they would surely come in ranks of grand alliance for the sake of democracy.
Pakistan, he said was passing through very tough time of its history. "Present government has caused a bad taste and bad will among tribal people by launching operation against them on behest of America, which has caused lot of security problems in this region", he added. He said that so far no warrior or conqueror has won tribal people and present government just to please foreign masters showered bombs and bullets on those innocent people.
Munawar expressed concern over the American designs in tribal areas and asked government to take immediate measures to stop American influence in those areas. "We are sure America is hatching conspiracy against Pakistan and some notorious plan is in offing. May be America has his eyes on China, which is emerging as great economic power in the world", he maintained.
He declared President Musharraf as unconstitutional president and chief of army staff (COAS) and asked him to leave both the slots and hand over power to Chairman Senate for holding free, fair and transparent elections to restore democracy in the country.
He termed President Musharraf as the weakest ruler of Pakistan and said that U-turns he took so far have no parallel in country as well as world's history. He said that Musharraf has declared Kashmir Jihad as cross border terrorism just to please India, which deems as salt rubbing on wounds of struggling Kashmiris. "Present government, in fact, left Kashmiris alone, which would have dangerous effects", he added. He said Musharraf has no right to talk on Kashmir, it is Prime Minister, the chief executive, to talk with India. But he added premier has proved himself a puppet.
Responding to a question about the role of opposition, he said the opposition was not weak. It was government, which was weak and has no direction to move.
To another question, Syed Munawar Hassan said that NAB was a political organisation and a tool in the hands of rulers to terrorise opponents. That organisation was working to press opponents of Musharraf and buy loyalties of people for him. "Musharraf himself admitted that 322 families have borrowed Rs 350 billion loans and not returned a single penny. But these people are in government and are not being asked to return this money", he added.
MMA leader expressed shock over the working of Price Control Committee and demanded immediate dissolution of that committee. The committee has failed to give positive proposals to bring prices under control and asked government to import sugar, meat and other commodities from India and China. He termed it a conspiracy against agriculture sector of Pakistan saying it would raise the unemployment besides destruction of economy. This, he said was height of bad governance as government has accepted the recommendations of that committee.
He condemned the use of force against journalists and said that on the occasion of Universal Press Freedom Day government exposed itself and passed a message that which kind of press it wanted to see in Pakistan. He demanded resignation of Information Minister and said "Sheikh Rashid has in fact proved himself as misinformation minister", he added.
