The government of NWFP has renovated toilets and bathrooms of the prisons all over the province and kneading machines have also been purchased for cooking 'roti' (bread) in the langers ( alms-houses). The renovation work was started in line with the directives of the chief secretary of the province Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi. It may be mentioned here that the chief secretary had expressed dissatisfaction over the poor and unhygienic conditions of bathrooms/toilets in prisons of the province and the laborious practice of kneading atta flour by the prisoners, which was a kind of punishment going on since the time of the British "Raj".
On this occasion, he had ordered the concerned authorities to renovate toilets and bathrooms of all the prisons of the province. He allocated a sum of Rs 1.5 million for this purpose.
The renovation work has cost a sum of Rs 2 million. The CS has allocated Rs 1.5 million. The rest amount was spent out of the prison department's budget.
The department has also purchased 15 kneading machines that have cost Rs 0.4 million.
