Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that necessary legislation will be carried out to ensure anti-thelessemia steps and its prevention in the province. He said Sindh was the first to take initiative in undertaking legislation to make blood transfusion system transparent and effective and its positive results are forthcoming. He was speaking as chief guest at a function in connection with Thelessemia Day held under the auspices of Fatimid Foundation here on Sunday.
The function was also addressed by Chairman Fatimid Foundation Lieutenant General Moin Uddin Haider (Retd), WHO's provincial operational officer Dr Ghulam Nabi Qazi, Dr Zeenat Issani, Dr Ghaffar Billoo and others.
The governor asked the doctors and experts to present their comprehensive proposals for legislation purposes so that the law regarding thelessemia and its prevention could be given a final shape.
He announced that the government will employ all possible resources for promoting preventive measures, awareness and treatment of this menacing disease. He said various steps would be required in this regard.
Regarding thelessemia test before marriage, the governor said that best possible initiatives be adopted by taking the country's social conditions in view.
Addressing the function earlier, Lieutenant General Moin Uddin Haider (Retd) also emphasised upon the steps for preventing thelessemia.
He appreciated governor Ishratul Ibad Khan for his efforts towards carrying out legislation in relation to safe blood transfusion and making Sindh province become the first in this regard in the country.
He said as a result of this measure there has been an improvement in the quality of blood at blood banks. He hoped that the governor will now make necessary headway in respect of thelessemia.
Appreciating the co-operation of media in developing consciousness and awareness against thelessesmia, General Moin called for more co-ordinated efforts towards this end.
He informed that out of 30 organisations functioning in the country, Fatimid Foundation is providing 72 percent treatment facilities against thelessemia and 20 percent expenditure thereof is borne by the federal government and rest by philanthropists.
Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan appreciated the services of Haider and Fatimid Foundation in this regard.
