In a successful endeavour to provide solar energy for human use, the Alternative Energy Development Board has connected 100 houses in Narian-Khorian village to solar energy. About 65 kilometres from the Federal Capital, the villagers will be benefiting from the cost-effective solar energy in leading their daily lives. Started as a pilot project at a cost of Rs 3.9 million, all 100 household have been provided with essential equipment to store solar energy and use it in their routine life.
Briefing a group of journalists, who visited the village on Sunday, Project Director Irfan Afzal Mirza said a water disinfector plant with water storage capacity of 1,500 gallons had been set up.
There would be 500 gallons purified water available for daily use of the villagers, he said, adding that the water would be lifted through solar energy-run pump from a 120-feet deep well.
Irfan Mirza said two panels of 40 watt each with battery of 12 volts had been installed at each house.
This energy was sufficient for four light emitting diode (LED), three-energy saver and one DC fan, he added.
He said a park also to be illuminated with solar energy, which had been made available for children of the village.
Public lavatories, separately for men and women, had also been made, besides water was provided through solar pump to this facility.
He said that there was a solar computer room adjacent to the local mosque where basic computer training would be imparted to children and youth.
Irfan Mirza said that two persons from the local community would be trained for imparting computer education to the people.
Responding to a question, he said all this equipment having life of 25 years had been provided to the village free of cost.
He, however, informed that villagers would have to hear the maintenance cost of these facilities. The Project Director said that a private company provided all solar energy panels while Alternative Energy Development Board had given other equipment.
There was a programme to provide solar energy cookers and rechargeable solar lamps to the residents of the village, he added.
He said such projects were also being completed in other provinces as well.
