Sindh Education Department (SED) and World Bank team have agreed to strengthen private sector in rural areas as part of the drive to bring three million out of school children under enrolment. Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy Dr Hamida Khuhro and World Bank Team decided this in a meeting; the later called on the minister as a part of their working on Sindh education report at her office here on Tuesday.
The World Bank Team comprised of Ms Tahseen Syed, Ms Sofia Shaikh, Hamid Mukhtar, Khalid Ikram, Ijaz Nabi, Deepark Mishra and Zahid Hussain along with Naveed Hamid of Asian Development Bank. Education Secretary Muhammad Hashim Leghari, Additional secretaries of Education Department for schools and PDF Iqbal Durrani, and Ahmed Fahim Mughal, Additional Finance Secretary Ms Nahid Durrani and Director SEMIS Professor M Ilyas Soomro participated in discussion about the ways to improve the educational system in Sindh.
The Minister for Education apprised the World Bank Team about problems being faced by the system, and steps being taken for educational reforms. She said heavy ratio of out of school children, dropout after primary and shortage of teaching staff were the crucial areas, which were being given high attention. She further said that recruitment process to hire new teachers was going on in a transparent manner.
Dr Hamida Khuhro said comprehensive teacher training programme has been started to ensure quality education while technical and vocational education was being revamped and restructured so that youth could be able to get maximum possible employment opportunities in private sector also.
Ms Tahseen Syed stressed the need for supervision and true political commitment in Sindh. She said that in Bangladesh around 23,000 schools were being run by NGOs and suggested to the Sindh Minister Education to visit and witness Bangladesh educational system. Ms Syed and other World Bank delegates also suggested for improvements in the working of schools' management committees that were being provided huge funds to improve educational institutions.
