Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) Managing Director Zafar Ali Khan has said that 1000 MW thermal electricity will be produced in the beginning of 2008 that will help overcome shortage of electricity in the country. Speaking in a PTV programme here Monday, he said from year 2007 to 2013, about $8 billion investment would be made in different projects of electricity in coal reserve areas. He said negotiation with a Chinese company was also in progress to produce 600 MW thermal electricity in Thar coal reserve area. Besides, various electricity generation projects were in different phases, which would hopefully make country self-reliant in this sector, he added.
The MD said advertisement had also been tendered to attract private sector to produce 450 MW thermal electricity from Lakhara coal reserve. Work on two projects was in progress in Sonajhar coal reserve to produce thermal power electricity, he informed.
To a question he said, response of private sector to invest in the power generation projects was very encouraging. To provide more facilities to the private sector, he said, Sindh government was focusing to develop infrastructure on modern lines.
Government was emphasising to generate electricity from coal and hydel resources, as it produced comparatively cheaper electricity.
"About 200 metric tonnes of coal reserves are present in Thar, Lakhara and Sonajhar areas of Sindh," he added.
