Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri left here on Tuesday for an official visit to Australia and New Zealand to discuss bilateral ties and regional and international issues. This will be the first ever visit by any foreign minister from Pakistan to the important countries of Asia and Pacific on a bilateral basis. "The visit will give an impetus to Pakistan's bilateral relations and promote mutually beneficial ties in political and economic spheres, and is an expression of the growing engagement of Pakistan with the leading countries of the world," a foreign office statement said. Kasuri's visit would help create a sustainable mechanism for enhancing bilateral co-operation between Pakistan and Australia and New Zealand in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture and education, it added.
"The visit will provide an opportunity for discussion of bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest and to forge greater ties in various fields," the foreign office said.
In Australia, the Foreign Minister will meet with his counterpart Alexander Downer and hold talks on issues including Afghanistan, Pakistan-India peace composite dialogue, counter-proliferation, United Nations reform and expansion of the Security Council.
Foreign Minister Kasuri will also address a prestigious think-tank in Sydney and interact with a host of Australian Cabinet Ministers.
The Foreign Minister will later visit Wellington and exchange views with his New Zealand counterpart Foreign Minister Phill Goff and meet other Cabinet Ministers.
The foreign minister will also meet with the Pakistani community in the two countries and hold talks with the heads of multinational companies, keen to invest in Pakistan.
