Raw sugar futures finished quietly higher Tuesday on modest amounts of speculative and trade buying, with most players on the sidelines attending activities ahead of the annual Sugar Club dinner on Wednesday, brokers said. The New York Board of Trade's July raw sugar contract edged up 0.03 cent to settle at 8.39 cents a lb, trading from 8.33 to 8.47 cents. It was an inside day since the range was within Monday's 8.32 to 8.48 cents band. October rose 0.04 cent to 8.41 cents. The rest increased 0.03 to 0.09 cent.
Fundamentally, the outlook was divided among trade sources. Bulls feel a surge in consumer buying could buoy values but the bears feel supply/demand is in balance and demand is weaker than people thought it was.
