Sony Corp will launch its next video game console, the PlayStation 3, in 2006, the company said on Monday (May 16). Sony boasted that the PS3 and its custom-designed "Cell" chip would have twice the processing speed of the Xbox 360, the new console from Microsoft Corp that will be released later this year. Just as the PS2 was capable of playing games from the original PlayStation, Sony said the PS3 will play PS2 games. It will also feature a built-in Ethernet port for high-speed Internet access, as well as two different types of wireless networking and a removable small hard drive.
The console will support Blu-ray, a high-definition and high-capacity format for the next generation of DVDs that is backed by Sony.
