The KESC, keeping to its old traditions, is very religiously resorting to indiscriminate loadshedding in the various areas of the city, except for some posh localities where the loadshedding is for name's sake only. Gulistan-e-Jauhar's residents are greatly inconvenienced due to the untimely day-and-night loadshedding that has become a daily routine. The worst affected are the residents of the high-rise apartments, who cannot afford the luxury of UTPs or the portable standby generators to keep their flats lit and cool. The children and ailing patients cannot rest well due to the loadshedding.
Water cannot be pumped up nor the lifts work during loadshedding. Most high-rises are not lucky enough to have standby generators, even if they do produce a deafening noise. The students taking their annual examinations cannot study in this oppressive heat.
The housewives, who most of the time are free, are annoyed, when the milk, meat and vegetables become stale in the refrigerators, due to untimely loadshedding. The ladies in the affluent families are bored when they cannot see their favourite TV serial dramas. It is not only the domestic life that is disturbed, but the continued loadshedding is slowing down the industrial output resulting is huge financial losses. Hence, the ongoing loadshedding should be brought to its early end in the interest of all.
The KESC will do well to take stock of their working and to curb the thefts of electricity by the 'Kunda facility' provided in some poor and affluent areas of this city. The regular taxpayers should not be punished for others' fault or the KESC's own inefficiency to cover the losses. Power generation should be given top priority to meet the growing requirement of power by the taxpayers and not the tax-evaders.
The KESC and the KW&SB cannot be absolved of their responsibilities for their perfunctory working that is resulting in the widespread power and water shortages in this mega city. Let their planner's plan now for 20-30 years' requirement to ease the lives of the rapidly growing population.
