Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Syndicate has approved 167 appointments against the vacant posts of professors, associate professors and assistant professors in 40 different units and varied departments pertaining to basic and clinical sciences of the varsity. DUHS Vice Chancellor, Professor Masood Hameed talking to APP here on Thursday said an absolute transparency had been maintained in the selection procedure of these teachers and an elaborate procedure with focus on merit was adopted for the same.
Out of numerous applications received only 500 applicants fulfilling the minimum criterion, as per PMDC rule of major qualification - holding FCPS, FRCS, MRCPG or MRCOG degrees were invited for interview by a selection board comprising vice-chancellor DUHS, Deans of different faculties, Chairpersons of concerned departments, two Syndicate, one Chief Justice Sindh nominees, besides technical experts in respective subjects/fields.
The interviews finally led to appointment of 167 teachers. 28 appointments for DUHS were those who had been serving at Sindh Government managed teaching units (mainly from Karachi) and 46 from private teaching colleges and university including seven working abroad but had applied for the above cited posts and appeared for the interview in person.
Answering a query he said 93 teachers already serving at DUHS were promoted from demonstrator to assistant professor and assistant professor to associated professor and associate professor to professors, deemed fit by the selection boards following interviews and their respective presentation.
Each board member including permanent members and technical experts were asked to mark each of the candidates out of the 10 marks. Total score of each candidate was amalgamated on basis of marks given by each member of the selection board, the vice chancellor elaborated mentioning that the strategy was to avert any pressure on any of the board member.
Answering another question, he said certain posts could not be filled at Cardiology, Nephrology, Radiology and Eye Departments, as none of the applicant was found to be meeting the standard and strict criterion adopted by the selection board.
He also mentioned that as per recommendations of PMDC and DUHS Charter there would be one professor, one associate professor and two assistant professors in each of the DUHS/CHK Units.
Earlier, he mentioned that since he assumed his responsibility as VC DUHS, he was facing the problem of shortage of teaching staff and PMDC had beep constantly recommending for the same.
The teaching institutions, which were part of the University including Dow Medical College and Sindh Medical College, had not been inspected by PMDC since 1992.
There were many teachers who were fully qualified but not promoted, he mentioned maintaining that there was urgency to address the situation but with extreme caution and care as it was directly linked with the capabilities of students who had to treat disease and serve the ailing humanity.
In this context, he also mentioned that DUHS has embarked upon a wide range of projects meant to meet the shortage of health care professionals including nurses, dentists, technicians, physiotherapists etc.
The Institute of Oral Health Sciences of DUHS would be operational from March 2006, he said adding that interviews of faculty for the institute would commence from next month.
