US Agency for International Development (USAID) will help develop support institutions in Pakistan to spur industrial and commercial activities. USAID mission director Lisa Chiles held a meeting with Smeda chief executive officer Shahab Khawaja on Thursday to discuss ongoing projects and identify more potential areas of industry requiring USAID assistance. Special projects director Anjum Ahmad and Smeda donor co-ordination and international linkages manager Imran Chaudhry also attended the meeting.
Lisa Chiles said USAID was working very closely with various government departments like BoI and Smeda to upgrade development procedures at par with world's standards.
She said benchmarking in BoI and upgradation work to be conducted in Smeda by USAID would help these organisations make significant contribution in the economic development of Pakistan.
She was of the view Pakistan needed to set its economic priorities in light of regional and provincial compulsions. She emphasised to expand ambit of technical and vocational education in Pakistan.
However, she suggested linking up technical education with existing and emerging industry.
Earlier, Smeda CEO Shahab Khawaja welcomed USAID mission director and apprised her about projects to be assisted by USAID. He said on dairy development, the assistance of American constancy firm J.E. Austin proved to be highly helpful.
Two representatives of this company were also accompanying Pakistan's delegation visiting Australia in the leadership of the Pakistan President.
He was confident that the strategy developed by strategy working group on dairy sector with the help of Smeda and J.E. Austin would help people of Pakistan have pure and hygienic milk at affordable prices.
