Initiating action against major tax defaulters the Excise and Taxation Department Sindh sealed the offices of two major gold importers M/s Tessori Trading (Pvt) Ltd and SB (Pvt) Ltd for their failure in paying taxes despite issuance of several notices to them. According to the Excise Department, a number of gold importers were not paying the Sindh Government's legal infrastructure cess, which is only 0.5 per cent.
The tax amount against Tessori Trading had reached the figure of Rs 64,815,700 due to its non-payment during the period from 2000-01 to 31-10-02. This included the penalty amount of Rs 32,407,850.
The amount of arrears against SB Private Ltd on account of default in payment comes to Rs 10,532,102 which includes penalty of Rs 5,266,051 and it was increasing every day.
The officials of the Excise and Taxation Department held several meetings with these gold importers and made them to feel their national responsibility. They also issued legal notices, repeatedly, but despite all efforts of the department, they kept avoiding the payment of infrastructure cess to Sindh Government and remained under the impression that this tax would not be recovered from them for their being resourceful.
The official sources said the department could not see that violation with helplessness and, therefore, while taking extreme action, sealed the offices of Tessori and SB Pvt Ltd at Zaibunnisa Street and I I Chundrigar Road immediately.
They said it has always been the desire of the Sindh Government that taxpayers were provided all possible facility and, therefore, that extreme action was not taken since long. The Excise and Taxation Department has requested the other tax payers not to avoid paying the government tax so that no further extreme action could be taken by the government.
