As a result of steps taken by the Punjab government during the last two years, the number of special children in government schools has increased by 20 percent and provision of government transport would further enhance this ratio. Punjab Minister for Bait-ul-Mal, Chaudhry Ejaz Shafi stated this while addressing a function of special children organised by Deaf and Dumb Society at Government Degree College Shahdara.
He said the government was attaching priority to education sector and extending all out assistance to this sector to meet the future challenges.
In order to achieve the goal of 100 percent literacy rate, the provincial government was providing financial assistance to the private sector, he added.
The government was also taking revolutionary steps for the education, training and rehabilitation of special children so that they could join national mainstream, he maintained.
"When the present government came into power, the provincial educational budget for special children was only Rs 20 million, which has now increased to Rs 400 million," he said.
"Fees of special children have been waived off, a monthly stipend of Rs 200 is being provided to each special child, while the salaries of the teachers of special education institutions have also been doubled," he added.
He stated that recreational facilities play an important role in the rehabilitation of special children, adding that it is our collective social and moral responsibility to provide maximum facilities to special children.
He further said special children should not be neglected as negative attitude of the family and society can adversely affect them.
He also made an appeal to philanthropists and well-to-do citizens to donate generously for the betterment of special persons.
