China is in contact with Pakistan and other friendly countries in its bid to promote consensus on the United Nation reforms. "We are against any unilateral move to adopt the reforms through majority vote," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan stated this at a weekly news briefing. When asked about China's position on expansion of the Security Council, he said that was only one part of overall UN's reforms, adding, "We oppose forcing voting on the issue."
Pakistan and China have an almost identical stance on the UN reforms and they want the world body to be more democratic and representative.
Reiterating China's stance on the UN reform, he said, the reform must not only make the council more representative but also contribute to its increased authority and efficiency and enhance its accountability and transparency.
To another question, the spokesman categorically stated the three-party talks held among China, India and Russia were not targeted against any country in Asia or in the world. "This is mutual consultation to discuss ways and means further promoting peace and security in the region," he added.
When asked to comment on the talks held at foreign ministers' level on June 2 in Vladivostok (Russia), he said the talks were focused on economic co-operation and improving understanding on regional and international issues.
Meanwhile diplomatic sources told newsmen that trilateral talks were not any kind of permanent mechanism or alliance, adding that was the part of China's ongoing efforts to improve its relations with the regional countries.
Russia, India and China, as three large neighbours in Asia, have common responsibility for maintaining stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to the sources, the three countries have agreed to cooperate in fighting terrorism, preventing natural disasters and overcoming their consequences.
They also agreed to step up practical co-operation between the three countries in countering new threats and challenges in particular, terrorism and drug trafficking.
"They also decided to cooperate more actively in preventing natural disasters and overcoming their consequences," the sources added.
