A British software engineer, who was "road testing" new safety technology for explorers during an ascent of Mount Everest, has died climbing to the summit of the world's tallest peak, Britain's Foreign Office said on Sunday. Robert Milne, 49, from Edinburgh, was just 366 metres (1,200 feet) short of Everest's 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) high summit when he died, the BBC said.
"We can confirm the death of a British national on Everest," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said. She said there were no details about what had happened.
Milne, a software engineer and entrepreneur, was testing technology called IM-PAC which was designed to provide more effective computer support to mountaineering expeditions.
In doing so he was attempting to join an elite group of mountaineers who have climbed the highest peak on each of the seven continents.
