European telecoms firm Tele2 starts a city network telephony service in Switzerland's financial centre Zurich on June two, turning up the heat on established rivals Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise. Sweden-based Tele2 said in a statement it would offer free mobile calls and SMS services within the city network, while calls to landlines will cost 0.08 francs a minute.
Tele2 will apply a 0.99 franc roaming charge for calls outside its network, which only covers the city of Zurich.
Tele2 has been expanding across Europe, mainly as a virtual network operator, renting capacity from established players and undercutting them on price to gain customers.
