The only and one GPO-75290 to cater the postal needs of more than one million citizens living in total 20 blocks of Gulistan-e-Jouhar, Karachi, provides irregular, uncertain and undependable services due to ignorance of postal authorities in the office of PMG (Sindh) circle. Despite various written, verbal and telephonic complaints to PMG (Sindh) by residents of this area, no attention has been given to improve the service.
As already notified to PMG, Sindh, the post office is not equipped with the required strength of working hands, electronic weighing scale, office furniture, electronic stamping machine (in evening shift), lights, fans, water and above all security arrangements to protect cash dealings.
The building in which the so called GPO exists, lies in a pure 'non-commercial' area enveloped by several high-rise residential buildings and bungalows deep behind 3-4 streets from the main road. No sign arrows have been fixed to guide as a result it is very difficult for the public to find it.
Many people are not aware of its location and have to go to far distant post offices. Most important aspects of a post office, such as its location in commercial area, easy approach, open visibility and deployment of security have been ignored. It is so incredible that not even a single shop, government or private office, exists within 500 metres range on all four sides of this GPO.
This GPO has been twice robbed for lack of security arrangements and for this reason, the post office staff in both shifts, either reluctantly entertain or refuse acceptance of 'cash dealings' of utility bills or money orders and at times close their doors at 1900 hrs prior to the scheduled closing time.
It is not only the post office staff but public is also terrified (in the absence of security) to make cash dealings for life safety. The building of post office looks like an abandoned and the post master alone (in the evening shift) is often seen doing all the jobs due to under-staffing.
The Director-General, Pakistan Post Offices and Federal Communications Minister are requested to open a few more Post offices in Gulistan-e-Jouhar to meet the postal needs of the public with arrangements of the required manpower, tools and deployment of security at this so-called GPO.
