Pakistan has been elected to the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for the term 2005-08 by obtaining 198 votes. The election was held during the 93rd session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.
In separate elections, Ashraf Wali Tabani, President, Employers Federation of Pakistan and Khursheed Ahmed, General Secretary, All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions were also re-elected to the governing body from the employers and workers groups respectively. Pakistan is amongst the few countries, which are represented in all three groups of the governing body.
Pakistan has already been a titular member of the governing body from 2002-05, and had extensive relationship with the ILO in the field of employment, standards, poverty eradication and efforts to eliminate child and forced labour. ILO-sponsored programmes on eliminating child and forced labour are cited as model programmes all over the world.
