The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Thursday demanded the International NGOs, OIC, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Secretary General United Nations to take serious note of desecration of the Holy Quran at Guantanamo Bay and the trial of responsible be conducted in the International Court of Justice. Addressing a press conference here at the Supreme Court building, Vice Chairman PBC, Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari also demanded the government to summon US envoy in Islamabad and get the protest recorded.
He said the Muslims could not tolerate the desecration of the Holy Quran and they would sacrifice their lives for the sanctity of the Holy Book, which was a complete code of life of the entire humanity.
He said that repeated sad incidents of desecration of the Holy Quran were deliberate attempts on the part of US to injure the sentiments of the Muslims. He regretted that Pakistan government had shown cowardice by not condemning the US. Ansari said Pakistani government even could not dare to summon the American ambassador at the Foreign Office to record its protest as was required under the diplomatic norms.
Earlier, former Vice President Supreme Court Bar Association, Muhammad Ikram Chaudhry demanded the OIC to hold a conference and evolve strategy to safeguard and protect the rights of the Muslim world.
President Islamabad district bar association, Tariq Mehmood and representatives various bar associations told that the lawyer community observed complete boycott of the court proceedings in Islamabad and Rawalpindi district courts as well as Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court.
Later the lawyers held a protest demonstration outside the apex court building. They were holding placards and banners inscribed with anti US slogans and demanding the US authorities to hold an impartial inquiry into the desecration issue and responsible persons be awarded punishment. It is pertinent to mention that the business of the Supreme Court continued smoothly and the lawyers did not observe boycott of the court proceedings.
