Construction work of Inter-City Bus Terminal on Super Highway by the City District Government (CDGK) is expected to start in the next two weeks. According to officials in City Government, tenders have been called in accordance with commitments of the CDGK to revamp the operation of Inter-City Traffic Movement System with a view to provide efficient, comfortable, reliable safe and adequate facilities to alleviate the problems of inter-city commuters as well as the transporters.
The increasing demand of inter-city operation of buses has resulted in crowding of city streets being encroached upon by operators and are a cause of inconvenience as well traffic congestion and negative environmental impact.
According to different surveys, on average 1380 buses enter or leave Karachi on a typical day. The multiple haphazard growth of inter-city terminals in the city has resulted in compounding the severe traffic jams, concentration of traffic demand in time and space.
The conditions in and around the existing illegal facilities have had negative effects on the surrounding communities in terms of safety, irrational loading activities, pedestrian problems and overall deterioration of the environment noise, pollution, fumes, visual intrusion.
The strategic plan for provision of inter-city terminal facilities comprises establishment of inter-city terminal facilities at the edge of developed area along the Toll Plaza.
Terminal points expected to be shifted in Baldia Inter-City terminal for Balochistan bound buses, which are 27 at Lea Market, 100 at Old Sabzi Mandi, 16 at Gulzar-e-Hijri, and 51 points at Mewa Shah Layari. The project needs Rs 39.409 million and completion period is four months.
Regarding National Highway, the revenue department of CDGK issued a notification on August 2, 2004 regarding allocation of 15 acres of land in N.C No 89 Deh Khanto Bin Qasim Town for construction of inter city terminal. In pursuance of above, the T&C Department of CDGK took over possession of land on August 10, 2004. The estimates for construction of boundary wall are in the process of preparation. Meanwhile, the concept plan of the terminal is being prepared for taking up the construction work shortly.
