The federal government has planned to establish three garment cities in Faisalabad to promote the sector and help earn foreign exchange by increasing exports from here. This was stated by Textile and Industry Secretary Syed Masood Alam Rizvi in a meeting of Board of Directors of Garment City here Wednesday.
Addressing the steering committee, he said he is visiting Faisalabad to undersize the irritants and hurdles in addition to discussing necessary remedial measures to bring the project on ground without any unnecessary delay.
He said the government as well as the textile minister intends to increase exports of garments on top priority.
Masood Alam Rizvi said the article of memorandum of the Garment City will be approved unanimous1y, however, it should be in line with the memorandum adopted for the garment cities of Lahore and Karachi, adding that all stakeholders, including concerned associations would be given due representation in the BoD of the Garment City.
Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh, Chairman Steering Committee for the Garment City briefed the Secretary about the decisions of previous meetings in addition to the identification of major irritants.
He said that first Garment City would be established near Industrial Belt of Khurrianwela. However, two more Garment Cities would also be created in other parts of Faisalabad city, he said, adding that Garment City would provide space to the small and medium entrepreneurs enabling them to increase garment exports to earn foreign exchange for the county.
Mian Mohammad Latif, Khurrarn Iftikhar, Ahead Kamal, Chaudhry Mohammad Siddique, Rana Javed Akhtar, Khawaja Mohammad Ainjad, Mian Mohammad Aftab, Arshad Gulzar and Qamar Aftab also attended the meeting.
Later, Syed Masood Alam Rizvi also had separate meetings with yarn merchants and powerloom owners. He also visited the proposed sites for the first Garment City.
