Since the last several days, the telephone connections of important business and commercial areas of Karachi, which include Timber Market, Jodia Bazaar and Clifton, have been under severe disorder. Communications with the local and international market have been negligible and resultantly business activities have come under pressure.
An important reason for this glitch appears to be the strike by the PTCL employees against the privatisation of the organisation.
It is lamentable that the government was intimidated by the threats of the so-called employees union, and aborted its plans of privatising the company. Yet once again, the government has given in to the strikers' demands and that too, at the expense of public welfare.
It was a case of daylight robbery. The general public and the business community, who were anticipating a turn around of fortunes with respect to telecommunications, have been deserted and left to bear with a monopolised system.
It is now quite evident that the corrupt mafia, which is hindering the development in the country, should be dealt with severely; and the sooner, the better.
The Honourable President and Prime Minister are urged to use an iron fist to suppress the influence of vested interests and get rid of those, who create hurdles in the way of national progress. The privatisation of PTCL is in the best interest of the nation and nobody should be allowed to play with the national interest.
Let the winds of change come.
