The month of June began with a spell of loadshedding for the citizens of Karachi. One would have thought that Karachi's populace should be used to such stretches of KESC's inefficiency after so many years of unwanted experience; but for them, each year, neither the heat of the summer diminishes nor the discomfort.
The upper and upper middle classes can find some alleviation in luxuries such as generators and UPS systems.
But what of the poor who are already struggling with rampant insanitation and health problems in the neglected slums of the city?
The imminent monsoon season spanning July to September brings hope as well as despair. Although the rains help ebb away the heat, the concurrent increase in loadshedding is unwelcome by all. Augmenting to this problem are those of widespread diseases such as malaria, cholera and viral infections.
Authorities are urged to remedy these perennial problems, paying special attention to the poorer areas of the city.
