Twelve trade union federations associated with the Trade Unions Action Committee have warned the federal government to withdraw Industrial Relations Ordinance-2002 or be prepared to face countrywide protest.
In a joint statement issued here, on Thursday, the trade unionists said that in December 2004 President Gen Pervez Musharraf had assured Workers Employers Bilateral Council of Pakistan and had instructed the labour minister to identify and remove irritants from the IRO 2002.
The leaders said that six months had passed but no action had been taken in this regard. This indicates that the matter had been ignored, the statement said.
The signatories to the statement S P Lodhi, Habibuddin Junaidi, Salim Reza, Shaukat Ali, Abdula Ghafoor Baloch, Rafique Ahmed, Malak Rafique, Shaikh Majeed, Roshan Kalhoro, M A K Azmati, Comrade Manzoor Ghani and Abdul Sattar were of the view that the government was playing delaying tactics.
"Indifference of the government towards the ILO 2002 indicates that they do not want to acknowledge the legal rights of labours and give them freedom to manage their affairs in a democratic manner," they added.
Trade unionists said that the labours want restoration of their moral and legal rights and an end to all anti-labour policies.
"It should be clear to the government that labours would not compromise on anything less than their rights to decide their future," they added.-PR
