The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) is likely to take up 48 new development projects worth Rs 120.844 billion when it meets here on July 16. The projects are related to transport and communication, mass media, energy, water resource development, population welfare, health, physical planning and housing, environment, education, science and technology, food and agriculture, women development and manpower sectors, it is reliably learnt.
Official source told Business Recorder here on Saturday that among all proposed projects, the highest were of transport and communication sector worth Rs 33.62 billion followed by health sector (Rs 22.26 billion).
TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION PROJECTS ARE: Rs 570.343 million Lakpass tunnel with foreign exchange component of Rs 114.086 million; rehabilitation of signal gear on Rohri-Shahdara Bagh main line sections (Rs 6.728 billion); improvement and upgradation of National Highway N-40 Noshki-Dalbandin section (165km) (Rs 1.99 billion); conversion of Mirpurkhas-Khokhrapar section meter gauge to broad gauge rail track (Rs 1 billion); construction of Peshawar Northern Bypass (Rs 3.078 billion); Rs 5.712 billion doubling of track from Khanewal to Raiwind including foreign exchange component of Rs 1.32 billion; rehabilitation and improvement of track (Rs 9.808 billion).
Construction, improvement and widening of 644km road from Wana (South Waziristan) to Khar (Bajawar) would cost Rs 4.738 billion. In healthy sector: Enhanced HIV/AIDS programme in Sindh (Rs 516.64 million); prevention and control of hepatitis (Rs 2.594 billion); Rs 11.47 billion expanded programme of immunisation and control of diarrhoeal disease with foreign exchange component of Rs 4.108 billion; Rs 1.325 billion 400 bed women hospital and chest disease centre at Rawalpindi including a foreign exchange component of Rs 106 million; National Programme for Preventive and Control of Blindness in Pakistan 2005-10 (Rs 2.775 billion); establishment of accident, emergency and ancillary services complex at Karachi Civil Hospital (Rs 1.438 billion); Rs 636.67 million tuberculosis control programme including a foreign exchange component of Rs 607 million; and Rs 1.5 billion technical assistance for Punjab Devolved Social Services with foreign exchange component of Rs 173.4 million.
FOR POPULATION WELFARE: establishment of additional RHS-A center Punjab (Rs 2.818 billion); population Welfare Program in Balochistan (Rs 1.389 billion); Sindh (Rs 3.495 billion); Punjab (Rs 7.414 billion); and NWFP (Rs 2.491 billion).
FOR MASS MEDIA DEVELOPMENT: two projects were recommended to Ecnec at a cost of Rs 1.597 billion were: Rs 597.937 million development program of broadcasting 2x100kw short-wave transmission and high frequency aerial system for world and external services, Landhi, Karachi (replacement of 2x50kw short-wave transmission) including a foreign exchange component of Rs 3.22 million; and development of summer capital at Gorakh hills (Rs 0.99 billion).
RS 5.53 BILLION PROJECT FOR IMPROVEMENT OF FINANCIAL REPORTING AND AUDITING (PIPRA) (PHASE-II): including a foreign exchange component of Rs 4.99 billion.
IN ENERGY SECTOR: provision of secured metering system at delivery points between electric supply companies (Rs 1.01 billion) including a foreign exchange component of Rs 513.19 million; umbrella PC-II for the infrastructure institutional capacity-building and project preparatory facility through technical assistance loan from the Asian Development Bank with a total cost Rs 2.02 billion including FEC of Rs 1.5 billion; and a 500kv Muzaffargarh-Gatti transmission line and sub-station extension project with Rs 6.771 billion including FEC of Rs 4.975 billion.
IN WATER RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT SECTOR: Construction of fall structure on Nara Canal, Re-sectioning of Ranto Canal and Strengthening NIP of Jamral canal Mile 17 to 49, costing Rs 1.086 billion without FEC, was also recommended to the Ecnec for approval.
THE PROJECT RECOMMENDED FOR APPROVAL TO ECNEC IN PHYSICAL PLANNING AND HOUSING ARE: ADB Technical Assistance for Basic Urban Services-Sindh costing Rs 995 million including Rs 480 million (FEC), Construction of Pakistan Secretariat Block T,U and V, Rs 1.18 billion, Water Distribution Network for Rawalpindi Cantonment from Khanpur source Rs 699.5 million and Acquisition of land for special economic zone-Gwadar Rs 4.5 billion and Urban Water Supply Scheme Phase-V Nawabshah Rs 505.45 million.
IN ENVIRONMENT SECTOR: two project will be taken up in Ecnec; Clean Drinking water Initiative with Rs 495 million and Environmental Rehabilitation and Poverty Reduction Through Participatory Watershed Management in Tarbela Reservoir Catchments Rs 532.46 million.
IN EDUCATION: PROJECTS ARE: Establishment and Operation of 43584 Non-Formal Basic Education Schools including 8970 Non-Formal Middle Schools with Rs 1.5 billion and Debt for Education SWAP-II NWFP of Rs 928.568 million.
FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT: three projects as Area Development Programme, Balochistan (Revised) cost Rs 972 million including Rs 532 million (FEC), Fata Rural Development project with Rs 3.51 billion including Rs 2.475 billion (FEC), Technical Assistance (TA2) for Gender and Governance Mainstreaming Rs 858.124 million in which Rs 420 million was FEC, are submitted for approval.
A project relating to higher education is also there for approval with Rs 767.185 million ie Purchase of Land at sector I-12 for Educational Village. Besides, a project worth Rs 2.52 billion is for Science and Technology development up-gradation/Extension of Pinstech Laboratories (Phase-II).
FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECTOR: two projects worth Rs 2.512 billion will be put up for approval ie Police Record and Office Management Information System Rs 1.41 billion and Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) Rs 1.11 billion, including Rs 720 million FEC.
Agriculture and food projects worth Rs 4.86 billion are Agribusiness Development and Diversification Project Rs 4.07 billion, including Rs 574 million of FEC; second project is Community Development Project for Rehabilitation of Salt Affected and Water logged Lands Rs 795.519 million, including Rs 265.153 million FEC.
For women development and manpower projects of Rs 2 billion will be put up for Ecnec approval, these are Restructuring of Technical Education and Vocational Training System Project (NWFP) Rs 723.664 million, including Rs 182.635 million FEC, and Restructuring of Technical Education and Vocational Training System Project (Balochistan) Rs 1.281 billion.
