A large tumour of nose engulfing left eye and skull was successfully removed and restoring eye sight of a 14 year old boy by doctors of ENT Department, Sindh Government Hospital, Liaqutabad here. The procedure extremely complicated and unique of its kind lasted for more -than three hours. It was performed by Dr Abu Asim Hamza, Head of ENT Department. 5.5W. Liaqutabad and assisted by Dr Imrana Iqbal and Dr Shahid Inam.
Dr Abu Asim Hamza talking to APP here Tuesday (June 28) said the tumour had displaced left eye ball of 14 year old Sabir Hussein, a resident of interior Sindh, and had also affected his frontal sinus and after eroding its wall entered into cranial cavity.
Besides facial disfigurement, the child reported with loss of vision, persistent headache and lack of. concentration besides physiological deterioration manifested through constant loss of weight.
Though it was a high-risk operation, the surgery was successfully performed and patient was able to regain his eye sight while significant improvement in other contexts could also be witnessed, the surgeon said.
Answering a question he clarified that no postoperative neurological deficit has been registered in Sabir.
Sabir Hussein was stated to be suffering from the condition for last four years, which had adversely affected his health, apart from already mentioned facial, disfigurement.
He was losing weight, sight and power to concentrate, Surgeon Hamza elaborated mentioning that actual cause for the tumour could be ascertained after receiving the histology report.
With regard to health status- of the patient -following the surgery, he said Sabir's motor and sensory functions are absolutely normal and the queer lethargic impression one could notice while looking at him has also greatly improved.
Dr Abu Asim Hamn extremely appreciate of his, colleagues in the ENT Department. Sindh Government Hospital - Liaqutabad, mentioned that the patient was recovering satisfactorily owing to dedicated efforts of Dr Irshad, Dr Badar, Dr Asfar and Dr Shahid bin Omer. Responding to another query, he said the parents of Sabir, who though had meager resources, attempted to take their son to different hospitals- but perhaps due to severity and high-risk nature of the procedure others avoided operating.
Dr Asim Abu Hamza reminded that it was only some -time back that he and his team of surgeons and anaesthetist belonging to Sindh Government Hospital - Liaqutabad successfully managed to remove a bullet which remained stuck in the throat o-f a man for more than three years.
The surgeon on much persuasion of APP said his hospital which comes across rare and extremely complicated cases does need its facilities to he updated, in the larger interest of people who simply do not afford -to avail interventions in private sector.
Mentioning that there was need to refurbish the casualty department of the hospital besides its IOU and Theater, he said ventilators, pulse oxymeters arid dyna maps were some of the main gadgets urgently required at the Sindh Government Hospital -Liaqutabad.
He said there was also need to improve and streamline the supply of drugs as the people visiting the hospital are mainly those who can not procure many of these on their own.
