Federal Petroleum and Natural Resources Secretary Ahmed Waqar has asked the World Energy Council (WEC) to help developing countries in producing cheap energy to meet future energy requirements.
"World Energy Council should help the developing countries so that they could become proficient in generating cheap energy to avert negative impact of increasing oil prices on their economy," he said here at the WEC meeting, with its Deputy Secretary General Jan Murrary in the chair.
Ahmed Waqar stressed upon the need for hiring the services of experts in alternative energy to meet global challenges.
Jan Murray said the council was established in 1924 to promote sustainable supply and use of energy for the greatest benefit of all the people.
She said over 90 countries, mostly the developing ones, are members of the council. She said that energy would play an important role in defining the future role of nations in days to come.
Jan Murray said the WEC focuses mainly on providing support in decision-making and helps its members in evolving medium- and short-term energy policies.
It also provides information to its members about the global energy services and assists them to carve their policies and strategies according to the changed scenario.
She said the WEC is striving to evolve a comprehensive strategy to meet the challenges of energy by 2050 so that energy could be ensured to all. The council covers all the countries, she added.
Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) Director General Hilal A Raza, host of the meeting, stressed that WEC should launch collective struggle from the platform of international energy organisations for cheap energy.
The meeting, which was attended by all the major oil and gas stakeholders, including officials from the Petroleum Ministry, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited managing director, was arranged by HDIP.
