The Union of Small & Medium Enterprises (Unisame) held a meeting with Chief Ministers Investment Cell (CMIC) Chairman, Dr Ghousuddin, at the Chief Minister's House here, on Wednesday and discussed its demand for concessional land in the outskirts of Karachi for the Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Unisame President Zulfikar Thaver was accompanied by Adviser Karachi Wholesale Grocers Group, Anis Majeed, and Pakistan Rice Syndicate Chief Organiser, Abdul Aziz Ghaffar.
The CMIC Chief at the very outset said the government was committed to give land to the Unisame for setting up industries.
He apprised the members of the steps taken by his cell in this direction and assured the applicants that it would not take long time but is a matter of few months.
He asked the applicants to submit layouts of rice, pulses, spices, dehydration, fruits processing & foodstuffs industries to assess the requirements of each industry and allot land, accordingly.
He asked the applicants to include power-generating companies in their setup for power generation on a collective basis and supply to all the SME industries located in the SME Village.
Likewise, he suggested collective sources for all types of service providers in the village for economical rates.
Zulfikar Thaver said that the SME Village concept was initiated in Thailand and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, being impressed by the system directed the Small & Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) to work on the same lines. The Smeda had made plans for the implementation of 'one product one village' for optimum results, he added.
He asked the CMIC Chief to interact with the provincial office of the Smeda for rapid industrialisation and consultative policy and framework.
Abdul Aziz Ghaffar and Anis Majeed assured Dr Ghousuddin on behalf of the applicants that the industries would be set up in the shortest possible time and requested the Cell to focus on the infrastructure in the promised areas namely Malir, Hawksbay, Northern Bypass and Baldia.
