The World Bank has announced $15 million for the rehabilitation of victims of devastated flood, which caused widespread displacement in the NWFP province. The WB country director, John Wall, announced to provide this amount during his meeting with the NWFP Senior Minister, Sirajul Haq, at the Civil Secretariat, Peshawar on Wednesday.
John Wall expressed sympathies on behalf of the organisation with the NWFP government as well as the people of the province on flood devastation and a major loss of agricultural land and properties.
However, he showed satisfaction over the fact that no human losses occurred due to safety measures taken by the provincial government timely despite high floods in rivers all over the province and majority of lands and villages inundated.
Appreciating the performance of provincial government, the WB official also assured the Senior Minister that the bank might consider enhancing the aid to $25 million in case of more relief requirements wherein the provincial government had to formally inform the Economic Affairs Division Islamabad.
Meanwhile, the NWFP government and the World Bank have agreed with the proposal to provide stipends of Rs 200 to each girl student from 6th to 8th classes all over the province for meeting their educational expenses with the aim to enhance women literacy ratio in the province.
It would then become part of the financial aid provided by the World Bank for social sectors.
The meeting attended by 3-member WB Mission led by John Wall, NWFP Secretary Finance, Secretary Schools and Literacy, Amajad Shahid Afridi, Secretary Higher Education Sahibzada Khalid, Secretary Health Abdus Samad Khan and other concerned authorities.
The meeting took stock of improving the standards of human development, primary, secondary and higher education and Medicare facilities in the province.
The authorities on the occasion apprised the meeting of the need and provision and use of financial aids by their concerned departments.
The mission had expressed satisfaction over the performance of the MMA government in educational sector.
The WB mission acknowledged that the MMA government created a stir in all social sectors through revolutionary steps like provision of free textbooks to students and free emergency treatment facilities to the needy people.
The mission expressed the hope that it would greatly help in improving life standard of the people that was first step of entering the comity of the developed nations.
The WB official also expressed the confidence that lot of womenfolk would be considerably ameliorated after revolutionary steps of the MMA government, including provision of stipends to the girls' students all over the province.
The Mission assured all out help and support in education, health and manpower sectors.
