Almost all major cities of Pakistan are faced with acute water shortage these days. The President's announcement of 'Potable water for all in 3 years' made the headlines in the newspapers.
I think it is a rather tall claim and will not be met, unless the people also co-operate with the government in conserving the water, which is wasted mercilessly by us all.
One of the way of conserving water is to recycle the water drained out by the 'soap lines' in our houses. Used water form the kitchen, laundry, shower and wash basins, car wash, floor wash (court yards, driveways, terraces etc after filtering it through ordinary steel gauze could be collected in an underground tank and pumped up to a separate overhead tank for flushing the toilets. Such recycling of wastewater could save nearly 75 percent of the water used in a house.
Municipalities could enforce this scheme for all new constructions and that alone will result tremendous saving of the water.
