The Meteorological department has issued heavy rain alert for Rawalpindi /Islamabad during next 24 to 36 hours asking authorities to take precautionary measures as water level in Nullah Lai might reach dangerous mark and cause flood situation. Nullah Lai passing through the heart of Rawalpindi City causes loss of life and property during heavy rains every year.
Met office told Business Recorder on Wednesday evening that wide spread three-day rain spell was expected in upper Punjab including Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi / Islamabad cities. During past 24 hours, 55 mm rain was recorded in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, 95-mm Sargodha, 52-mm Faisalabad, 64 mm Dir, 3I Murree, 30 mm Balakot and 28-mm Gujranwala.
Flood Control Commission (FCC) sources told that, because of floods in River Kabul and river Swat in NWFP, some villages of Charsadda and Nowshera districts have been inundated. Due to rise of water in river Swat, erosion has started at villages Naqai, Sukkur, Dher and Daulatpur.
According to the latest data available to the FCC, River Indus was in low flood at Tarbela, Attock, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa with down stream discharge between 315,200 and 357,483 cusecs.
However, the peak of flood wave was passing through Sukkur with up-stream discharge of 493,425 cusecs and Guddu Barrage up stream discharge of 508,060 cusecs.
River Jhelum and Chenab were flowing normally at all points including Marala, Qadirabad, Trimmu, Mangla, Panjnad as total Rim Stations Inflows of 656,591 against outflows of 584,761 cusecs. Water in all irrigation canals was flowing according to their full capacity.
