It's peace that attracts foreign investment and enhances Pakistan's image on the globe. Now-a-days, incidents of crime have increased in the city, causing uncertainty among the Karachiites. According to reports, several robbers were found engaged in snatching mobile phones in shops, houses and even in hospitals.
In the process dacoits even killed people who offered resistance. The other day, in a local hospital some persons after snatching mobile phones from several people, grabbed a doctor's mobile, who paid with his life while resisting.
This ghastly incident took place despite the presence of security guards. In the hospital, to meet the security purposes, at entrance a close circuit TV camera has been fixed but this facility failed to help trace the mobile snatchers.
This sent a wave of shock and surprise in the masses. Hoping the situation will improve as the government has taken several measures aimed at bringing halt to these incidents.
Several factors point out what leads to this situation but a few of them were on top. The primary factor surely is inflow of population from other parts of the country and the rising unemployment.
Whenever readers pick up newspapers to know the developments, most of the times, they shudder to go through the lines saying how badly Karachiites had suffered all the day.
Many doctors are advising the patients not to read the newspapers which may cause high blood pressure. People from all over the country make a beeline to Karachi in search of a job for two square meals, but most often than not they fail and fall upon thieving and stealing to fill their belly.
Resultantly, the daily comers get lost in the city population while fresh ones stream in further aggravating the crime rates in the city. Under the circumstances, the police exploit the jobless vagabonds, for allegedly mutual games.
The wives of some interior Sindh people come down to Karachi for their husbands but still they were not to be found. Poor women's plight could be gauged while husbands were lost in Karachi's wilderness, wives themselves had no relatives, safe haven to stay without coming into trap of the bad elements roaming freely.
These unfortunate women with tears rolling down their faces said that had they known this is our metropolitan Karachi they would have embraced despondency and even death but had not ventured to be here in search of their husbands.
Is there any way out to trace our husbands? Additionally, corruption has assumed the status of virtual industry in Sindh.
A few years back, Pakistan was according to a study, placed on top of corruption and even today the same institution places Pakistan on second and third position in corruption. This deterioting situation demands rectification to improve chances of more foreign investments and creation of jobs as a solo good Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth citation is not enough for progress of the country.
Corrective efforts should be taken to provide jobs to the rural people in far-flung areas to check the inflow of population.
A Special Karachi Package may perhaps take into account all these factors, which make life of Karachiites miserable. The Sindh government is on the right track, asking for special consideration through the NFC Award, unduly delayed.
The government is taking all necessary measures to stop criminal acts to maintain peace but more steps are needed to tackle the uncertain condition due to rising violence.
