Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European stocks posted small losses on weakness in oil stocks, such as BP, which tracked volatile crude oil prices, but drugmaker Novartis extended gains on news of its US expansion.
Standout performers included Dutch retailer Ahold, up 3.75 percent after it agreed to sell its Deli XL food service unit, completing a series of asset sales planned since 2003.
The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index ended 0.16 percent lower at 1,163.6 points, just off a three-year high hit on Thursday. The index rose 1 percent this week, scoring its ninth straight week of gains, fuelled by robust corporate earnings growth.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 4,712.9 points, up 13.63 or 0.29 percent, a gain of 114.93 points on the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 4,373.77 points, up 2.89 or 0.07 percent and a rise of 73.46 from a week ago.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed 6,459.91 points, up 10.73 or 0.17 percent. The index gained 147.75 points over the week.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 25,376 points, down 90 or 0.35 percent, but adding 320 points since July 8.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares closed flat, as gains in safe haven banking issues were offset by losses in energy stocks like Woodside Petroleum and Santos due to softer oil prices. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index fell 2.7 points, or 0.06 percent, to close at 4,292.4, adding 63.2 points over the week.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: The bourse slipped as gold producers were hammered by weak prices and investors took profits on high flyers like financial group FirstRand. The All-share index closed at 14,720.93 points, down 59.02 or 0.40 percent, a rise 263.13 since last week. The All Gold index closed at 1,714.14 points, down 51.32 or 2.91 percent, losing 105.97 on the week. The Industrial index closed at 10,966.77 points, up 87.47 or 0.80 percent, 436.58 points higher from last Friday.
