Livedoor Company plans to apply for one of up to three new mobile licences that the Japanese government is expected to issue later this year, the Nihon Keizai business daily reported on July 15. Livedoor will apply for the 2.0-gigahertz band, for which the government plans to allow one new entrant, the report said.
Mobile broadband start-up IP Mobile Inc and Willcom Inc, in which electronic components maker Kyocera Corp has a 30 percent stake, have already announced plans to vie for that spectrum, it added.
Livedoor could not immediately be reached for comment.
High-speed Web access provider Softbank Corp and wholesale broadband provider eAccess Ltd aim to win 1.7-gigahertz licences, for which the government plans to allow up to two new entrants.
Livedoor's service would use Kyocera's iBurst high-speed wireless technology, the Nikkei report said. Livedoor plans to develop infrastructure through co-operation with PoweredCom Inc, the telecoms arm of Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), it said.
