US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday to discuss ongoing efforts to combat Islamic militancy and extremism, said Information Minister Sheikh Rashid late in the evening.
Earlier, the government detained around 40 people, including Islamic clerics, in a countrywide swoop on suspected militants, police sources said Tuesday.
GEN ABIZAID: Meanwhile, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander-in-Chief General John P Abizaid, who is currently on an official visit to Pakistan, paid a courtesy call on President General Pervez Musharraf in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
During the call, they discussed regional and international geo-strategic situation with particular reference to Afghanistan, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
The President expressed hope that the visit of CENTCOM C-in-C and his meetings with the Pakistani military leadership would help further enhance the existing co-operation between Armed Forces of both countries.
General Abizaid also visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) where he met Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ahsan Saleem Hayat. They exchanged views on matters of professional interest.
