Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sh Rashid Ahmad, inaugurated 'Smeda Legal Services Cell' here at Sarhad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) on Friday night.
The purpose of the cell is to facilitate small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) in resolving their legal problems by providing expert advice and opinion with the assistance of a network of lawyers in addition to raising awareness of legal rights and creating understanding through training courses, seminars and self-help manuals.
Those present on the occasion included a former president of Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) Senator Ilyas Ahmad Bilour, SCCI president Niaz Ahmad, Ghulam Sarwar Khan Mohmand and other members of the business community.
Rashid said that due to better policies of President Pervez Musharraf the economy of the country has been strengthened and Pakistan, once an assistance or loan seeking country, is now standing on strong footing.
He said that revenue collections, export, import and industries have registered improvement while the privatisation process has also started earning handsome profit for the country. He said that PTCL, once a sick institution, has been revived and its privatisation has pitched a huge amount of $10 billion.
The minister said that Peshawar is a potential business place and the business community of Peshawar has golden opportunities in Afghanistan.
He said that the government, with issuing licences of electronic media has given new trend to promotion of business activities.
