The Provincial Food Department has achieved 69.66 per cent of wheat procurement target for the current year. Sources in the Food Department told APP the department had been assigned wheat procurement target of 3.5 million tons.
Against this target, 2.438 million tons of golden grain was purchased after the wheat harvest. In the beginning the pace of procurement was fast but afterwards the wheat arrival gradually at the purchase centres slowed down.
The whole of the Punjab is divided into eight regions for the wheat procurement purpose.
THEIR TARGET ALONG WITH THE PROCUREMENT AND PERCENTAGE IS AS UNDER:
RAWALPINDI: target 10,000 tons, achievement 3,060 tons (30.60 per cent); Gujranwala: target 3,65,000 tons, achievement 1,55,057 tons (42.48 per cent).
LAHORE: target 3,90,000 tons, achievement 1,36,328 tons (34.96 per cent).
FAISALABAD: target 4,10,000 tons, achievement 3,96,807 tons (96.78 per cent).
SARGODHA: target 3,40,000 tons, achievement 2,33,193 tons (68.59 per cent).
MULTAN: 9,60,000 tons, achievement 5,87,849 tons (61.23 per cent).
DERA GHAZI KHAN: target 4,35,000 tons, achievement 4,45,925 tons (102.51 per cent) and
BAHAWALPUR: target 5,90,000 tons, achievement 4,79,943 tons (81.35 per cent).
Rawalpindi region showed the lowest achievement (30.60 per cent) while Dera Ghazi Khan surpassing its target showed the highest achievement (102.51 per cent).
The sources said the Food Department issues wheat to the flourmills for flour supply to the general public and to the provinces as per requisition by the federal government. The sources said due to government permission for wheat and flour import no requisition has so far been received by the provinces.
Last year when the procurement rate was fixed at Rs 350 to 360 per 40 kg the issue rate for the flour mills had been set at Rs 400.
