-- In 1993, 1994 and 1996 Armstrong failed to finish and did not compete in 1998 as he was recovering from cancer. He finished 36th in 1995.
-- In 1999 he made a triumphant return to become only the second American after Greg LeMond (1986, 1989 and 1990) to win the event.
-- He became the first American to win the Tour three times in a row and in 2003 became the fifth rider - after Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain - to win the Tour five times.
-- In 2003 Armstrong also equalled the exploit of Spaniard Indurain, who was the first man to win the Tour five times in a row (1991-1995).
