Political workers of Jamaat-i-Islami opened fire on provincial Tourism Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal here in Samanabad on Tuesday, as a result of which a passer-by Adeel received bullet injuries. According to police official, although Mian Aslam Iqbal did not receive any injury, but some bullets hit his car.
Some Jamaat-i-Islami workers after exchanging hot words with the minister in a mosque and opened indiscriminate firing when he came outside the mosque.
High police officials reached the spot and directed the concerned police officials to take strict action against the culprits and arrest them immediately. The police have registered a case.
While addressing a press conference, former Lahore Nazim Mian Amir Mehmood condemned the attack on Mian Aslam Iqbal and said that the government would not allow to create law and order situation in the city.
He said that the opposition parties wanted to sabotage the local bodies elections by creating such situation, adding that the government would not allow anybody or party to disturb the local bodies elections.
The workers of opposition parties, which were seeing their defeat in the elections, were acting in bad manner in depression.
He said that the opposition parties accused the government of rigging, but its workers are creating law and order situation in the city, adding that the government would handle all such people with an iron hand.
He asked the opposition parties to direct their workers to keep calm and not to disturb the present peaceful atmosphere of elections.
He also called upon the public to support the government in holding peaceful local bodies elections.
