National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain on Tuesday called upon parliamentarians to play their role in resolving the longstanding disputes between India and Pakistan. He was talking to High Commissioner of India to Pakistan Shivshankar Menon, who called on him in his chamber at the Parliament House.
Amir Hussain said closer co-operation between India and Pakistan and resolution of disputes, including the Kashmir dispute, was not only in the best interest of the people of both the countries, but it would also unlock tremendous resources for the development and prosperity of the region.
He called for better understanding and reducing the trust deficit between the two nuclear arch rivals.
The speaker said that mutual contacts and frequent visits of the parliamentarians of both the countries would help in better understanding and dispute resolution.
He said Pakistan was fully committed to the ongoing composite dialogue process with India and hoped that the leadership of both the sides would succeed in resolving all disputes, including the much-awaited Kashmir dispute.
Amir Hussain also said the future of both India and Pakistan depends on strong democracies and closer co-operation, as their relations would have far reaching impact on the regional peace and development.
Highlighting the importance of local bodies in Pakistan, the speaker said that the local bodies were the backbone of democratic institutions and a conduit for empowerment of people at the grassroots level.
The Indian high commissioner said closer co-operation between both the countries would usher in an era of prosperity in the region. Menon also stressed closer co-operation on all issues at the international fora.
Earlier, the speaker was given a presentation by M/s Bearing Point on human resource development policy for the staff of the Parliament Secretariat.
